“Gustave Doré (1832–1883), was a renowned French engraver, illustrator, cartoonist, and sculptor of the 19th century. At the young age of 15, Doré began his studies in Paris in 1847 and signed an illustration contract with the magazine "Le Magasin Pittoresque" in 1848, marking the commencement of his artistic journey. With the fame gained from his illustrations for Rabelais' "Gargantua and Pantagruel" (1854) and "The Mischievous Stories" (1855) series on Balzac, Doré went on to create illustrations for literary giants such as Shakespeare, Balzac, Dante, Milton, Cervantes, La Fontaine, Edgar Allan Poe, and others. He became the highest-paid commercial artist in Paris and a pinnacle in the world of illustration.”
